Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB)

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the Central Bank of the Kingdom of Nepal, was established in 1956 under the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to discharge the central banking responsibilities including guiding the development of the emergent domestic financial sector.

The micro-finance Department of NRB has played a vital role to develop the microfinance system in Nepal through introducing policy, systems and institutions. It introduced the priority sector (small sector) lending programme in 1975 and the intensive banking programme (lending in small and micro sector) in 1981.

It has played an active role for the creation of an enabling legal and regulation environment for microfinance institutions in the country. Further, in 1992, NRB participated in equity and management to develop the Grameen Banking system by introducing regional rural banks as a replication of Bangladesh Grameen Banking model.
RUFIN is working with NRB to design the microfinance policy and to develop a rural finance strategy for the country.
